New FTC Rules Won't Deter Celebrity Social-Media Endorsements

Don't expect the FTC's new guidelines on product endorsements to put a damper on social-media efforts.

Since the guidelines became official two months ago, marketers and agencies alike have been educating themselves on the guidelines, modifying spokesperson agreements and implementing new social-media policies. The marketers and agencies that spoke with Ad Age all said the new rules would not deter them from any social-media or celebrity-endorsement efforts.

Gaming for fun - and charity + My Space Pink

Levi's Launches Scavenger Hunts, Live Theater

Drawing on dusty history lessons to reach a youth market is always dicey. But Levi's thinks its latest twist on the "Go Forth" campaign -- an interactive scavenger hunt that combines its 19th-century street cred with online-gamer allure -- will help young men connect with the denim giant in a whole new way.

The game's debut, the company says, is the latest iteration of its "Go Forth" campaign, launched back in June and inspired by the wilder works of Walt Whitman. And it comes just weeks after the San Francisco-based company announced another way to pursue the young and vaguely poetic, sponsoring the Berkeley Repertory Theatre's premiere of "American Idiot," the stage version of the Green Day album.

"We are always trying to reach consumers in the spaces that they live, and in this case, invite them to engage actively as well," says a spokesperson for Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore., Levi's ad agency. The "Go Forth" game, also by W+K, asks users to solve the mystery: "Who was Grayson Ozias IV and where is his fortune?"

To bring the brand's history to life, the company invented Ozias, a character it says is based the brand's "pioneering and innovative spirit." He disappears in 1896 after hiding his gold, but not before leaving a few hints with one of the Strauss family. Clues steer players toward cities and towns across the U.S., and each task triggers the next clue.

Bits of the puzzle will be released over a seven-week period, and the first player to solve the cryptogram not only wins $100,000, but they get to vote for a U.S. nonprofit to receive $100,000, as well.

Ads for the game will run on Facebook and Twitter, online, and in ESPN The Magazine.

Meanwhile, the W+K spokesperson says, Levi's continues to expand the "Go Forth" campaign with new print executions, and greater distribution of its second TV spot, O Pioneer.

Like many clothing companies, Levi's has been struggling. In its second-quarter results, net revenues fell 3% to $905 million, and it posted a net loss of $4 million. The company is scheduled to announce its third-quarter numbers later this week.

The spokesperson shares the following stats:

- 37,575 connections have been made (via stories shared, flowers gifted, etc.)

-  13,259 MySpace users are “friends” with the community

Every year, Pink Together identifies a number of survivors to serve as the site's ambassadors. "From sharing hope with other newly diagnosed women to raising awareness about early detection with 20 somethings -  this group of commendable people is reaching others through MySpace," says MySpace Senior Vice President of Marketing, Angela Courtin. "Their belief is that one person's story becomes another person's hope and inspiration."

The site has tools like forums, "virtual bouquets" to send to friends and family, and ways to stay up to date on cancer-related news.

Twalkin

Food For Thought….also posted on blog http://heartsmarter.blogspot.com/

Check out “Twalkin” – this could have some useful applications for those exploring how we can deliver health information. For instance, some have been exploring how to use Texting services to deliver health messages. This could be an interesting and similar approach.  Another idea, what if followers of AHA Twitter account could hear from Nancy? Rose? Survivor? Through this service?

Robo.to – what if we could provide the recordings that people could download and use as their incoming message?  “Help me save lives and sponsor me in the Heart Walk!”  “Take care of your heart, know your numbers!”

RobotVision – identify GWTG hospitals in the area, AEDs, CPR classes….

140+ NEW WAYS TWITTER CAN DELIVER MORE THAN JUST (OCCASIONALLY) FUNNY ONE-LINERS

Given the media's infatuation with it, you'd think Twitter had been caught having an extramarital affair. By now, you should be well-versed in 140 character prose, so - if you're not already following Trendcentral on Twitter, but your eyes are blurring at the sight of hashtags - here are some interesting new ways to leverage the service:

Twalkin : Twitter is undeniably useful as an information sharing tool, but what about when your communication needs more than the microblogging format offers? Recently introduced at the 140 LA Twitter Conference and debuting next month, Twalkin is a free app that allows Twitter users to have a live voice connection at the touch of a button, with one follower, a particular group of followers, or a mass broadcast open to anyone. Twalkers have complete control over who they want, or don't want, to listen in at any point during the 'broadcast.' With the app, a musician can perform a live set for fans, a comedian can test a new stand-up act, or a community organizer can create a town hall forum. While the idea of participating in what is essentially a big conference call with strangers may seem odd, remember that you also thought the same thing about Twitter at first.

Robo.to : With built-in webcams expected to become a smartphone staple in the next year, might we finally emerge from behind the relative anonymity of our keyboards? That's the thinking behind this new mobile service. Positioned as a 'video calling card,' Robo.to lets users publish 4-second videos that play as their call is incoming to the person on the receiving end. It will also collate multimedia status updates from various networks (e.g. Twitter, Facebook) to stream during the call, thus giving users of the service so-called "conversational lubricant." The thinking, we suppose, is that having specific subject matter at hand will make chatting less awkward. We're not sure why that's necessary if you're already friends with the person and thus probably know more than you'd like about their life, but apparently many would disagree: The service has captured more than 100,000 users since its August private beta launch.

Robotvision : Already, you thought the iPhone was a modern day wonder, but this application takes its powers a step beyond into Jetsons territory. This augmented reality app uses Bing Local Search, along with the accelerometer and compass technologies of the iPhone 3GS, to superimpose points of interest within a user's area onto their phone's video screen. Also, it can display geotagged Flickr photos in the vicinity. Taken to its Twitterverse extreme, Robotvision could transform the microblogging service into a matchmaking one, allowing users to find and engage nearby tweeters. Imagine getting your dumpling fix in Chinatown and suddenly being alerted to the fact that your crush is blocks away cruising the latest exhibit at the New Museum. Stalking suddenly takes on a whole new, and not so creepy, face.
